September 11, 2001 changed the United States of America. Every anniversary since is an existential moment, an invitation to reflect on who we are becoming. The actions of those evil men and the heroic response of those ground zero heroes call us to such a reflection. So too, does the continuing menace of the Islamic State. On this thirteenth anniversary we should honor the memory of the almost 3000 innocent people whose lives were violently taken by evil men who claimed that their god told them to kill the innocent. Along with mourning the victims of the attack on the US, we should also mourn the loss of the many thousands more who have been murdered by the Islamic State.
