SOBERING THOUGHT: Only 11 nations on Earth NOT at war currently
By Catholic Online (NEWS CONSORTIUM) | August 17, 2014

The news has been bleak as of late: A standoff in Ukraine, shelling in Gaza and Islamic State making a hash of Iraq and Syria. A think tank has some sobering news for the casual observer; as of late ONLY 11 nations are not currently at war. It's a distressing trend that shows no signs of abating, either -

In the first two centuries of Christianity, as the early Christians sought to serve in the broader Roman society by engaging in all suitable occupations, some occupations had to be avoided. To practice them would require them to violate their faith. As some other professions began to compel the Christians to apostatize, they had to withdraw their participation as well. But this is NOT ancient Rome, it is the United States of America. We have a robust interpretation of the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights to the Constitution which recognizes religious liberty as a fundamental human right and the free exercise of religion - or do we?

The martyrs of Korea - and innumerable others throughout Asia - handed over their bodies to their persecutors; to us they have handed on a perennial witness that the light of Christ's truth dispels all darkness, and the love of Christ is gloriously triumphant. With the certainty of his victory over death, and our participation in it, we can face the challenge of Christian discipleship today, in our own circumstances and time.

This event is a part of the naturally supernatural progression in the life of the Blessed Virgin of Nazareth. Her Yes, her Fiat of surrendered love, brought heaven to earth. This exercise of her human freedom, responding to the invitation of God, as sent through an angel, to be the Mother of the Lord, forever changed human history. It opened her up to the glory of heaven. That glory not only came to dwell within her, but later received her, body and soul, into heaven. Mary is thus the sign and promise of the Church\'s future. She also provides the pattern of the Christian life and vocation. All who say Yes to her beloved Son - and live their lives in that kind of surrendered love - can bear Jesus Christ for the world. They are joined with Mary now and will join with her in the fullness of that communion of love which she now enjoys in eternity.

Dear brothers, a prophetic witness to the Gospel presents particular challenges to the Church in Korea, since she carries out her life and ministry amid a prosperous, yet increasingly secularized and materialistic society. In such circumstances it is tempting for pastoral ministers to adopt not only effective models of management, planning and organization drawn from the business world, but also a lifestyle and mentality guided more by worldly criteria of success, and indeed power, than by the criteria which Jesus sets out in the Gospel. Woe to us if the cross is emptied of its power to judge the wisdom of this world (cf. 1 Cor 1:17)! I urge you and your brother priests to reject this temptation in all its forms. May we be saved from that spiritual and pastoral worldliness which stifles the Spirit, replaces conversion by complacency, and, in the process, dissipates all missionary fervor.

Pontifical Council Statement on the Violence in Iraq
By Vatican Radio | August 14, 2014

No cause, and certainly no religion, can justify such barbarity. This constitutes an extremely serious offense to humanity and to God who is the Creator, as Pope Francis has often reminded us.

Will Suffering, Struggle, Failure and Pain Make us Bitter or Better?
By Deacon Keith A Fournier | August 16, 2014

St. Paul was an extraordinary man and an extraordinary Christian. An Apostle, raised up out of the ordinary course, he accomplished great things for the Lord as he eagerly responded to His calling to build the Church and, through her, to help change the world. A man so profoundly close to the Lord he followed that he had mystical experiences arising out of his interior life, his intimate communion with God. He certainly had a strong relationship with the Lord and his prayer life was solid. Yet, this great Apostle suffered greatly. He was misunderstood and betrayed by brethren. He experienced intense emotional, economic and physical hardships. He had many reasons to become bitter. He did not. He became better.

Now living in Lebanon, a Catholic family who was forced to flee their home in Mosul, Iraq, have begun to share their horrific ordeal at the hands of Islamic State rebels. The family's patriarch has vivid memories of that June evening. "These people know no limits of humanity, decency, or respect for human life," he said of the Islamic State fighters.
