Duck Dynasty Breaks Cable Records: Robertson Family Moves Hearts with Authentic Christian Faith

The Robertson family, like most families, has eccentric members. They are given over to the inside humor between one another which is so often used as a means of showing affection, especially among men. The personalities are delightful. My wife and I have developed our favorites among the cast. The situations they face each week, and the lessons learned as a result, serve as a framework for communicating timeless values in a simple but effective way. There are real, human, redemptive values on display in each episode as the family faces the stuff of raising children, remaining faithful to their marriages, and supporting one another in the rough and tumble of real life. In addition, in almost every episode, they end with the extended family sharing a meal which begins with a heartfelt and sincere prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord.

WEDNESDAY HOMILY: We Are Called Into the Vineyard of the Lord

This parable tells us today we all have a calling, a vocation, and a mission. No matter what time of the day we experience the invitation, it is time to get to work. The word vocation derives from the Latin word meaning voice, vocare. The Lord speaks to each of us and says, You go Into My Vineyard too! He invites us to respond afresh at every age and stage of our life.

A Reflection on Moral Theology: What Are We Choosing and Who Are We becoming?

What we choose determines who we will become. Choosing what is good changes the chooser, empowering him or her to proceed along the pathways of virtue and develop the habits which form Christian character, as they cooperate with grace . The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses human choice, action and freedom: "The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin. (Cf. Rom 6:17)" (CCC#1733)

TUESDAY HOMILY: The Width of the Door of Faith

The disciples, few of which would have been wealthy by material standards, nevertheless took Jesus' words personally, asking, "Then who can be saved?" They knew what Jesus meant, which is to pass through the door of faith into his kingdom we must be willing to detach ourselves from our possessions, to do what the Rich Young Man didn't believe he could, to live the first beatitude and acquire true spiritual poverty because we find our wealth in God's kingdom. We cannot serve both God and mammon. Either we leave our attachments mammon to pass through the door of faith into Christ's kingdom or we hold on to the mammon, like the Rich Young Man and remain outside.

Recapturing the Two Wings of Faith and Reason

Perhaps the two wings of reason and faith that inform the Catechism may, with a bit of grace and with some sincere prayer, find their way into your mind and heart and therein engender love, love of the God-man Jesus, the Logos (Reason) made Flesh (John 1:14), in whom "we see our God made visible and so are caught up in love of the God we cannot see."

Crackdown in Egypt; Rage Directed at Coptic Christians; U.S. Response Is Hypocritical

The Egyptian military crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood was tragic. However, I believe ousting Morsi and cracking down on the Brotherhood is necessary. I also believe that President Obama's response was hypocritical. Taken together, these events constitute a warning for Americans.
