That's when a priest appeared out of nowhere."He came up and approached the patient, and offered a prayer. It was a Catholic priest who had anointing oil with him. A sense of calmness came over her, and it did us as well. I can't be for certain how it was said, but myself and another firefighter, we very plainly heard that we should remain calm, that our tools would now work and that we would get her out of that vehicle.Where did this guy come from? We're looking for the priest and so far, no one has seen him. Whether it was a priest as an angel or an actual angel, he was an angel to all those and to Katie. We would like to find this gentleman and be able to thank him,"

When Valerian arrived, Deacon Lawrence presented him with the true gold and silver of the Church, the poor! The emperor was filled with rage! Beheading was not enough for this Christian Deacon. He ordered Deacon Lawrence to be burned alive, in public, on a griddle. Witnesses recorded the public martyrdom. The deacon cheerfully offered himself to the Lord Jesus and even joked with his executioners!

Downward Mobility, the Cross and the Compassionate Life
By Deacon Keith Fournier | August 10, 2013

The Gospel (Matt. 16:24-28) speaks to us of denying ourselves. Part of what that means is simply refusing to be the center of our own lives anymore. We are invited by the Lord to empty ourselves of ourselves - in order to be make room for Him to live His Life within us and through us.

Indeed, a new family member means a changed routine, more laundry and less sleep. Sadly, our culture often weighs the gift of a child on this secular scale, but to do so is to remain sleeping on the mountaintop (or perhaps to never ascend its height in the first place.) Because if Christ is within us, than His glory is made manifest through each one of us. Understanding this truth can transform our relationships and our seemingly mundane lives.

There are numerous stories circulating about the actor Matt Damon. An ardent advocate for public schools and teachers unions, he chose to send his own children to private schools in Los Angeles. The purpose of some reports was to criticize him and focus on his political views. I wish the reports had focused on the choice he made, for his children and as a parent. Every parent should be able to make that same kind of choice for their own children, not just those who are wealthy. This is not a liberal or conservative issue, it is an issue of what is right, for our children, for our parents, and for our Nation.

Today we honor Dominic. As the thirteenth century began, great errors were deceiving many of the faithful in the south of France. There were false teachers in the Church, leading many astray. Like all heresies, the Albigensian heresy weakened the faith of many and led to a weakened Church. Those who succumbed to the errors could no longer properly answer that fundamental question, "Who do you say that I am?" As a result, they lost sight of who they were - and who they could become by responding to grace and following the Lord in the heart of His Church. Cultures become less human when they cease to be fully Christian.
