This was his first visit to Nazareth, his own hometown, after He began His public ministry. In the ordinariness of His Sacred Humanity, He was simply too much for them. They took offense at God Incarnate! After all, he was the son of a carpenter, and his extended family lived in the neighborhood! How could He preach this kind of message of repentance? How could he work miracles? So it is with those who bear His name - Christians - if we truly seek to walk in His ways, to participate in His ongoing redemptive mission, to be faithful to His continued work, through His Body, the Church, of which we are members. They will - they do - take offense at us!

Primerea: The Spanish Slang at the Heart of Pope Francis's Theology
By Andrew M. Greenwell, Esq. | August 4, 2013

God, Pope Francis says, "nos primerea." The expression "nos primerea" is in Lunfardo Porteño, or Buenos Aires street slang. It is the language not of high-brow Castilian, but low Spanish, the Spanish of the barrio. It is not a theological term even in Spanish, but a popular term and reflects Pope Francis's pastoral sensibilities. It means that God always "bests" us, always "firsts" us, always is therefore before us, anticipating us. God loves us first, seeks us out first, awaits us first.

Both major political parties are corrupted. Many who lead them have either forgotten or denied that there even is a moral basis for a free society. Their leaders insist that social and economic issues are separate, proposing a form of social schizophrenia. They are mistaken. Just as the human person is a unity of body and soul - and the separation of the two can lead to dualism - so, in the body politic, the separation of moral truths from economic and international concerns erodes a Nations foundation and leads to collapse.

Three major drugstore chains--CVS, RiteAid, and Walgreens--have moved "Plan B," a drug that can induce an abortion, onto the open shelves in their stores, where it is now sold like aspirin or other non-prescription drugs. Plan B's package states: "This product works mainly by preventing ovulation (egg release). It may also prevent fertilization of a released egg (joining of sperm and egg) or attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus (implantation)."

Same-sex marriages now recognized in Rhode Island, Minnesota
By Catholic Online (NEWS CONSORTIUM) | August 2, 2013

Lawmakers in allegedly heavily 'Catholic' Rhode Island passed the law redefining marriage this spring after more than 16 years of efforts by homosexual and lesbian marriage equivalency activists. The Catholic Church has not, cannot and will not, change its position concerning marriage as solely possible between one man and one woman. The statistic simply demonstrates the sad fact that many catholics either do not know what their own Church teaches or are in open defiance. Like the massive movement in France, a movement defending marriage as between one man and one woman - as well as defending the rights of children to have both a mother and a father - is being formed in the United States. The members consider their position on Marriage as between one man and one woman as a matter of the Natural Moral Law and view their struggle as a human rights movement.

In other words, when it comes to marriage and family life, men and women are not interchangeable. The whole civilized world knows that. Those who signed the open letter in the Tribune proclaimed their adherence to the Catholic faith even as they cynically called upon others to reject the Church's bishops. The Church is no one's private club; she is the Body of Christ, who tells us he is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life."

"Is Christ the centre of my life? Do I really put Christ at the centre of my life?" Because there is always the temptation to want to put ourselves in the centre. And when a Jesuit puts himself and not Christ in the centre, he goes astray. In the first Reading, Moses forcefully calls upon the people to love the Lord, to walk in His ways, "because He is your life" (cf. Deut. 30, 16-20). Christ is our life! The centrality of Christ corresponds also to the centrality of the Church: they are two flames that cannot be separated: I cannot follow Christ except in and with the Church.

This image of God pitching his tent and filling it with his glory has been richly reflected upon in the Christian Tradition. It has been seen by many holy men and women as giving us an insight into the role which Mary, the Mother of the Lord, played in God's plan of redemption. She was seen as a new tent of meeting, overshadowed by the Holy Spirit; the new Ark of the Covenant, who became the place where Jesus, the New Covenant, took up residence - and from whom - was born, given for the sake of the world.
