Sarah wasn't entirely sure about this whole online dating thing. But the other options weren't producing the results she wanted. "I knew I wanted to marry a strong Catholic," the retail store manager said without reservation. "One day after Mass I saw the ad for CatholicMatch on the back of the bulletin and the rest was the work of the Holy Spirit."
That's where Carl enters the picture. The 33-year-old police officer in Colorado was the type of upstanding man with a traditional sense of honor that Sarah was looking for. In the spring of 2009 they made contact online and exchanged messages for several weeks before deciding to meet face-to-face.
Carl and Sarah chose July 14 for their first date and that wasn't a coincidence. It's the feast day of St. Kateri, recently canonized by Benedict XVI, and whose Native American heritage has given her the name "the lily of the Mohawks." St. Kateri has a special place in Sarah's life and the saint was surely watching over this couple as they met in person for the first time.
That first date led to a second date where they attended Mass together for the first time, and that in turn led to an eight-month courtship. Sarah grew to love Carl for his virtue with regards to sexual morals and for the compassion he showed for others. "Even in regard to total strangers," she said with admiration. "Carl is very honest and not afraid to speak out for what's right, no matter the consequences."
Carl's honor and compassion, along with his protective and prayerful instincts were what convinced Sarah that she'd found a shining star in a world that often seems overrun by immorality. He felt the same way about her, and demonstrated as much when he took her on a picnic.
"After we ate lunch, he pulled out a bottle of champagne and asked me to be his wife," Sarah recalled. There was one little problem. "I was so surprised and happy…that I couldn't speak," she told CatholicMatch. "So is that a yes?" Carl prompted. Indeed it was.
Carl and Sarah were married in April 2010 and today they have two seven-month old twin girls, as the build their family together.
The couple thanks CatholicMatch for providing not only the venue to meet, but a profile structure that enabled them to be sure they were meeting someone who shared their beliefs on both faith and morals. But it's ultimately Carl and Sarah themselves who first chose to live lives of fidelity to God and the Catholic Church.
