Not all families are cut out to host
donations are needed as well, and
volunteers are needed to keep these programs going.
It takes just one person to change a child's life forever.
And as God works, those children change our lives as well. | Dear Catholic Online Reader, Approximately 11,000 Colombian children live without parents due to a variety of factors: abuse, family violence, parents in jail, extreme poverty, and the Colombian civil conflict which has caused displacement of families and entire populations and children are cruelly recruited as soldiers.  The vast majority of these children outside of family care are languishing in Colombian orphanages with little hope for returning to their family or finding a new family because they are "older" (more than 6 years old). Exacerbating the problem is the stigma that Colombian society assigns to these children and Colombia adoption.
Orphanage care damages children. Neurological systems do not develop normally when a child is deprived of a mother's nurturing. Cognitive delays occur and children who don't move into families before age 2 suffer irreparable IQ damage. When a child who has grown up in an orphanage turns 18, the child is emancipated from the system and must leave the only home they have known. As a result many don't finish school, become homeless, turn to crime and prostitution and are easy targets for criminals and traffickers. As the Easter season is upon us, it is a great time to think about how the miracle of a new life can be created for these children - this summer! These children are resilient. While they have had tough starts, they can be loving, contributing members of families and of society. Kidsave International, a nonprofit working in Colombia and the USA offers families interested in helping a child an opportunity to truly make a difference. Children are given summer vacations with families - so individuals who have room for one more in their home (or are considering adopting) can take in a child and provide life-saving outreach to help that child find a family. The program is aptly called Summer Miracles.  Children stay in the USA for four weeks and the host family introduces that child to people who might be interested in adoption. It's a summer filled with activity, community and service to the children. For many children it is their only chance to find a family. Church-based programs are especially powerful when a congregation unites to support a couple of hosts in the community. Kidsave's hosting programs work. Since 1999, more than 1,700 individual children have been hosted through Kidsave and 8 of 10 have found permanent families. See just a few of our many success stories here.
