On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, Federal US District Judge John E Jones III of Pennsylvania discarded marriage to "the ash heap of history." Those were his very words! Of course he hid them in the judicial sophistry which now accompanies these frequent acts of judicial imperialism. He maintains he is opening the door to the oxymoron called "gay marriage" and claimed to be somehow liberating out entire social order because, in his words, "We are a better people than what these laws represent". The laws he is referring to are the laws which the people of Pennsylvania passed in 1996 defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Of course, those laws also reflected the Natural Moral Law, the Bible, the Christian and Jewish tradition -and almost every other major religious tradition. The laws concerning marriage between one man and one woman cross cultural and religious lines and are universally accepted precisely because they are true and they serve the common good.

Marriage is more than a private arrangement between two people. It's a public commitment of love and fidelity, and it's ordered not just to companionship but to creating and rearing new life. This is why every child deserves a mother and a father in a loving marriage, and the child is the fruit of that love. All men and women are formed in the image of God and deserve our respect. But attempts to redefine the nature of marriage, no matter how well intentioned, damage a cornerstone of our human interaction and ultimately work against human dignity itself.- Archbishop Charles Chaput

The Catholic Church proclaims that, in and through Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, authentic unity with God the Father - and with one another - is the plan of God for the entire human race. The Church is the way toward that unity. As Orthodox and Catholic Christians we should want to walk toward that unity and not fear it. The image used of two lungs breathing together is a prophetic one. The Orthodox and Catholic Churches need one another. The Church is meant to become the home of the whole human race. For the Church to continue the redemptive mission of Jesus most effectively, she must be one. It was not the Lord\'s plan that Christians be separated. It is His Plan that the Church be restored to full communion. His prayer will someday be answered. May this visit of the successor of Peter hasten that day.

Jeb Bush is correct. It is time to move beyond the stale rhetoric and ineffective top down federal educational programs and enact real educational Reform in the United States. That reform requires parental or school choice. We need real educational revolution and not the rearranging of chairs on the Titanic which has masqueraded as educational reform in the past. I use the term parental choice in education when advocating for this reform because I think it more aptly recognizes that parents are the first teachers. Therefore, they should be the ones who make the choice where to expand their teaching mission for their own children. This choice should make available for all parents good public, private, parochial, virtual, classical, charter and home schools.
