In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God\'s possession, to the praise of his glory. During the days between the Easter and Pentecost, our readings at Mass take us back to the missionary exploits of the nascent Christian Church. They also help us to understand and put into perspective the mission of this present hour. Paul's manner in the Aereopagus, a place where the men of Athens met to debate the meaning of life, can instruct us in our missionary task. I encourage Christians to stop viewing this time in which we live as post-Christian. There is nothing we face in this collapsing Western culture which Christians have not faced before.

I am always drawn to these words of Jesus on Memorial Day weekend, \"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one\'s life for one\'s friends.\" (John 15:13) Military service which leads to laying one\'s life down is certainly an expression of this kind of heroic love. It also deserves to be honored. Those who witness to it are champions - and we should stop and reflect on their valor and virtue today.On this Memorial Day, I ask you to consider a practice I was inspired to embrace years ago. Whenever you see a man or a woman in uniform, stop and shake their hand. Thank them for their service to our Nation and smile.

Do Catholics "pray to Mary"? Yes and no. Because we are "surrounded by a vast cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1) it is best to say we pray "with" the saints. They are our prayer partners, and as the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Queen of that army of prayer warriors she is the primary saint with whom we pray. We have to remember who Mary is. Mary is a totally unique person. She is the one human being chosen to offer her flesh to be taken by the Son of God. No other human being has this intimate relationship with God-that he entered her womb, took her flesh and was as close to her as any son could be to a mother. The church has rightly recognized therefore that she is "higher than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim". If we pray with the saints we pray most gloriously and powerfully with her.
