Headlines Memorial Day: Honor Those Who Died in Service. Thank Those who Serve. Pray For the Nation By Deacon Keith Fournier | May 26, 2014 I am always drawn to these words of Jesus on Memorial Day weekend, \"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one\'s life for one\'s friends.\" (John 15:13) Military service which leads to laying one\'s life down is certainly an expression of this kind of heroic love. It also deserves to be honored. Those who witness to it are champions - and we should stop and reflect on their valor and virtue today. On this Memorial Day, I ask you to consider a practice I was inspired to embrace years ago. Whenever you see a man or a woman in uniform, stop and shake their hand. Thank them for their service to our Nation and smile. Continue Reading... Kianna's will remains unbroken - as her captors turn up the pressure - Part 4 By Catholic Online (NEWS CONSORTIUM) | May 23, 2014 For the next two weeks, Kianna was largely kept in the room save for bathing time. The stern, angry woman - who she was told was Jo's "mother" who at first met her at the compound had taken on the role of her teacher. Several hours a day, she would lecture Kianna on how things were and what she needed to do to survive at the compound. Continue Reading... Tennessee brings back electric chair, but is it the right move? By Catholic Online (NEWS CONSORTIUM) | May 23, 2014 If there's a symbol of capital punishment in the United States, it's the electric chair. Invented by Thomas Edison and used only in the United States, the chair could make a comeback as lethal injection comes under intense scrutiny. The state of Tennessee has reintroduced the chair as a method of execution. Continue Reading... Fr Dwight Longenecker: Do Catholics Pray to Mary? By Fr Dwight Longenecker | May 24, 2014 Do Catholics "pray to Mary"? Yes and no. Because we are "surrounded by a vast cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1) it is best to say we pray "with" the saints. They are our prayer partners, and as the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Queen of that army of prayer warriors she is the primary saint with whom we pray. We have to remember who Mary is. Mary is a totally unique person. She is the one human being chosen to offer her flesh to be taken by the Son of God. No other human being has this intimate relationship with God-that he entered her womb, took her flesh and was as close to her as any son could be to a mother. The church has rightly recognized therefore that she is "higher than the cherubim, more glorious than the seraphim". If we pray with the saints we pray most gloriously and powerfully with her. Federal Judge in Pennsylvania Assigns Marriage to the 'Ash-heap of History': Persecution in a New Missionary Age By Deacon Keith A Fournier | May 25, 2014 On Tuesday, May 20, 2014, Federal US District Judge John E Jones III of Pennsylvania discarded marriage to "the ash heap of history." Those were his very words! Of course he hid them in the judicial sophistry which now accompanies these frequent acts of judicial imperialism. He maintains he is opening the door to the oxymoron called "gay marriage" and claimed to be somehow liberating out entire social order because, in his words, "We are a better people than what these laws represent". The laws he is referring to are the laws which the people of Pennsylvania passed in 1996 defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Of course, those laws also reflected the Natural Moral Law, the Bible, the Christian and Jewish tradition -and almost every other major religious tradition. The laws concerning marriage between one man and one woman cross cultural and religious lines and are universally accepted precisely because they are true and they serve the common good. Archbishop Chaput, Pennsylvania Catholic Conference on the Judges Decision to Strike down the Defense of Marriage Law By Catholic Online | May 22, 2014 Marriage is more than a private arrangement between two people. It's a public commitment of love and fidelity, and it's ordered not just to companionship but to creating and rearing new life. This is why every child deserves a mother and a father in a loving marriage, and the child is the fruit of that love. All men and women are formed in the image of God and deserve our respect. But attempts to redefine the nature of marriage, no matter how well intentioned, damage a cornerstone of our human interaction and ultimately work against human dignity itself.- Archbishop Charles Chaput Continue Reading... Pope Francis in Jerusalem: Will the Meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew Advance Full Communion? By Deacon Keith A Fournier | May 22, 2014 The Catholic Church proclaims that, in and through Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, authentic unity with God the Father - and with one another - is the plan of God for the entire human race. The Church is the way toward that unity. As Orthodox and Catholic Christians we should want to walk toward that unity and not fear it. The image used of two lungs breathing together is a prophetic one. The Orthodox and Catholic Churches need one another. The Church is meant to become the home of the whole human race. For the Church to continue the redemptive mission of Jesus most effectively, she must be one. It was not the Lord\'s plan that Christians be separated. It is His Plan that the Church be restored to full communion. His prayer will someday be answered. May this visit of the successor of Peter hasten that day.
