Honoring our Mothers on Mothers Day: A Christian Reflection

For those whose mothers and grandmothers are still alive - cherish them today. Hug and kiss them. Honor them. Thank them. For those whose mothers have gone home to the Lord, remember them. For all who bear the name Christian, the name of our eternal family, let us also honor the Mother of the Lord today. Her maternal care for Jesus still embraces all those who are joined to Him, as members of His Body, by that great new birth of Baptism. Finally, let us ask the Lord to open our eyes, and our hearts, to come to more fully understand the great mystery and gift of the Church as our Mother. Let us live our lives as Christians, by living in the heart of Mother Church, for the sake of the world into which we are sent to bear the Good News.

Pope Francis renews plea to help the world's poor

GHASTLY: Skinned, naked statue of Virgin Mary stuns Long Island neighbors

A Statue of the Virgin Mary in Long Island is seemingly more appropriate for a Chamber of Horrors. This ghastly 33-foot-tall bronze statue depicts a walking woman whose skin has been ripped away from the right side of her body, exposing skull, muscles and her fetus. On private property, the owner has since draped the statue with a black tarp.

Starving and destitute, Kianna meets a very special 'friend' - Part II

Kianna made her way to the marketplace, walking unpaved, dirt roads. It would be here she would spend the day panhandling for coins in order to buy food for her brothers and ailing mother. She had taken to stealing bits of food from stalls recently, but she knew that this was wrong. If she was to be caught, angry shopkeepers would beat her as an example to all the other street urchins. Kianna reached the main part of the street, and saw lots of familiar faces - there were untold other children just like her, all vying for the same limited amount of money doled out by shoppers.

This time around, committee members-officially called experts-chastised the Holy See for its opposition to abortion during its review of the Holy See\'s report on compliance with the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Convention against Torture, CAT). Committee members stated that pro-life opposition to abortion results in torture for women. Abortion, an act that results in the often painful death of a child in the womb and which can inflict lasting negative emotional, physical and psychological consequences on the woman, is real torture but the experts chose to ignore these facts, focusing instead on the Catholic Church\'s respect for the right to life and opposition to abortion.
